Preserving Hamtramck’s incredible history

The Hamtramck Historical Commission is now in its 11th year of operation, preserving the rich history of Hamtramck.

It’s been an eventful decade plus one year, as we have gone from a group with good intentions and little else to a fully functioning city commission with a huge array of material.

The Commission has grown steadily through the years in terms of adding to our collection of Hamtramck memorabilia and expansion of our archival items.

The Commission also conducts activities, such as leading guided bus and walking tours of the city, holding slide show presentations on different aspects of the city’s history, acquiring historical markers for appropriate places in the city as well as gathering artifacts to save and put on
display.

But in one sense the Commission’s most significant activity has been in the establishment of its archives. In 1998, when the Commission was formed, we did not have a single document in our collection. Today we have thousands in individual files covering the significant persons, places and events that have made up the city’s wonderful history.

Many forgotten persons have been dragged back from the dust bins of
history and restored to a proper place of remembrance as part of the city’s past. Large gaps that existed in the city’s story have been filled in. And now no important element of the city’s history is allowed to slip unnoticed into the past.

As a result, we now have a comprehensive - although still incomplete - history of Hamtramck. Eventually the remaining holes in our story will be filled, but the work of the Hamtramck Historical Commission will not stop.

It is our intention to continue preserving the history of Hamtramck.
